Newsstand: Notre Dame women’s basketball forward Liza Karlen leaves exhibition with injury
The Notre Dame women’s basketball team looked dominant in a 101-41 exhibition victory over Davenport on Wednesday, but the win came at a cost. Graduate senior forward Liza Karlen was helped to the locker room with a lower-leg injury near the end of the first half. She did not return and left Purcell Pavilion on crutches and in a boot.
Karlen, a Marquette transfer with one year of eligiblity remaining, scored 6 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, blocked 2 shots and added a steal and an assist each in 14 minutes prior to suffering the injury. The Irish only had seven available players to begin the game and played the entire second half with six. Karlen never sat on the bench in the second half; she stayed in the tunnel with her boot on.
Karlen was an All-BIG EAST First Team member as a senior. She averaged 17.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game last season. She led Marquette with 10 double-doubles. She was placed on the 2024-25 ACC Newcomer Watch List, but now her status for the Nov. 4 season opener vs. Mercyhurst and beyond is in jeopardy. Head coach Niele Ivey did not have an update on Karlen’s injury status in her postgame press conference.

Fighting Irish quote of the day
“It’s just impossible to not see the path forward for this team. [Marcus] Freeman has never had a record of 7-1 in his three-year tenure. He’s never been close enough to the CFP to taste it. He’s there now, so long as he isn’t eating too much of his kids’ Halloween candy to take away from that CFP taste this week. Maybe that’s what he should do, though; don’t get too caught up in what is not yet a done deal.”
