One of the best players in women’s college basketball calls South Bend, Ind., home. Notre Dame freshman point guard Hannah Hidalgo was named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 on Tuesday night.
The Wooden Award is annually awarded to the best player in college basketball, as chosen by a poll of national experts. The winner will be announced on April 12.
A Notre Dame player has never won the Wooden Award. Iowa’s Caitlin Clark is the reigning recipient. UConn’s Paige Bueckers won it two years ago.
Hidalgo is fresh off leading Notre Dame to a road win over then-No. 8 UConn. The Irish dominated the fourth quarter in an 82-67 takedown of the Huskies at Gampel Pavilion. Hidalgo had 34 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists.

“It’s truly a blessing how God blessed me here today on the court to come out and beat them on their home court,” Hidalgo said after Notre Dame’s win. “I’m proud of my team. They did a great job and helped us get a big win.”
Hidalgo is averaging 24.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 5.1 steals per game. She leads the nation with 97 steals. The all-time Notre Dame record for a single season is 114 set by Skylar Diggins. Hidalgo has a chance to inch closer to that mark with a road game at Georgia Tech on Thursday followed by a home game against Pittsburgh on Sunday.
