Common sense could say Caitlin Clark is running away with women’s college basketball’s national Player of the Year award again. ESPN says Notre Dame freshman point guard Hannah Hidalgo might have something to say about that.

Analyst Andraya Carter was especially high on Hidalgo.

“Look at Paige Bueckers’ numbers when she won, look at Caitlin Clark’s numbers last year. Hannah stacks up against them offensively, and she blows them out of the water defensively,” Carter said. “She is a true two-way player. Leads the nation in steals per game with 5.5, leads the nation in fast break points. She is lights-out. … Hannah Hidalgo needs to be in the conversation.”

Hidalgo was averaging 23.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.6 steals and 5.5 assists going into Thursday’s game against Syracuse. The No. 15 Irish lost to the No. 22 Orange, 79-65, in South Bend. Hidalgo had 23 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in the defeat.
