Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Niele Ivey has been recognized for leading the Fighting Irish to a 20-4 overall record and a 10-3 mark in ACC games. Ivey was named to the late-season watch list for the 2023 Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year award on Thursday.

No. 10 Notre Dame is 1.5 games behind Duke (22-3, 12-2 ACC) for the top spot in the ACC standings. The Irish have four regular-season games remaining, including tonight’s tilt versus Louisville (19-8, 10-4 ACC) at Purcell Pavilion in South Bend.

The Irish have not beaten the Cardinals since 2019. The losing streak stretched to six games last year with two ugly defeats. If the Irish win out and the Blue Devils stumble in one or more of their final four games, then Ivey would be deserving of a look to win the coach of the year award.

The Irish missed the NCAA Tournament in former head coach Muffet McGraw’s final season and in Ivey’s first, but they returned with a roar last spring with an appearance in the Sweet 16. They narrowly lost to North Carolina State in that round, nearly making it to the Elite Eight. Ivey has turned the Irish around, and the country has noticed.

It wasn’t Utah’s Andy Ludwig. Instead, it was Irish tight ends coach Gerad Parker.

Quote of the day

“Simply put, before anyone is out in a plane or shown in public as ‘the guy,’ all facts should be known and the decision agreed upon. Clearly that was not the case & the result was a very bad look for all involved on ND’s side.”
