Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees has emerged as Alabama’s top target for the same role and was in Tuscaloosa Thursday to interview for the job, as first reported by ESPN’s Chris Low and confirmed by On3’s Matt Zenitz. Rees has held that job with the Irish since January 2020.

In job title terms, Rees would be making a lateral move if he accepts an offer to join the Crimson Tide staff. That would mark a rarity among the exit methods of recent Irish offensive coordinators. Here’s a look at some of the coaches to hold the job before Rees and where they went in their first stop after Notre Dame. Coaches marked with an (*) were let go or ended their tenures when a head coach was fired, and those without it left on their own.

Chip Long* (2017-19): Tennessee offensive analyst

Mike Sanford Jr. (2015-16): Western Kentucky head coach

Mike Denbrock (2014): Notre Dame associate head coach/wide receivers (was also receivers coach in 2014)

Chuck Martin (2011-12): Miami Ohio head coach

Charley Molnar (2010-11): Massachusetts head coach

Mike Haywood (2005-08): Miami Ohio head coach

Bill Diedrick* (2002-04): CFL Calgary Stampeders assistant coach

Kevin Rogers* (1999-2001): Virginia Tech quarterbacks coach
