Report: Former Notre Dame guard J.R. Konieczny transfers to Florida Gulf Coast

Former Notre Dame guard J.R. Konieczny has chosen his transfer destination, according to Sports Michiana reporter Angelo Di Carlo. Konieczny will spend his final year of eligibility at Florida Gulf Coast.
Konieczny, a 6-foot-7 South Bend native and South Bend Saint Joseph graduate, averaged 4.3 points in 32 games (four starts) as a senior. He made 21.8 percent of his attempts from three-point range and added 2.8 rebounds per game.
After playing minimally as a freshman and redshirting his sophomore year (which is why he has the extra year of eligibility), Konieczny played 32 games and started 19 as a junior. He scored 7.7 points and grabbed 4.5 rebounds per game, but his playing time declined this past season, both in volume and consistency.
Finishing his career at a place that offered more minutes was always a likely outcome for Konieczny, particularly after he went through senior day festivities March 8. In his final season at Notre Dame, he averaged 16.3 minutes per game as opposed to 22.7 as a junior.
He began the year as the sixth man in head coach Micah Shrewsberry’s rotation, but as conference play began, he became a seldom-used reserve. His minutes increased in February and March after fellow guards Matt Allocco and Braeden Shrewsberry suffered injuries, but the writing was on the wall for Konieczny’s career with the Irish.

Playing what would be his final game in South Bend, Konieczny scored 13 points — two shy of his season high — in 37 minutes throughout Notre Dame’s quadruple overtime win over California. He also grabbed 8 rebounds, finishing just two short of a double double. He posted four of those throughout his junior year.
However, Konieczny looked for a place that offers more consistent minutes in the transfer portal, and he found one in Florida Gulf Coast.
The Eagles, of “Dunk City” fame from their 2013 run to the Sweet 16 that included wins over No. 2 Georgetown and No. 7 San Diego State, last made the NCAA Tournament in 2016. They finished third in the Atlantic Sun with a 13-5 league record (and 19-14 overall), but they were upset by Queens in the quarterfinals of the ASUN Tournament.
Notre Dame will replace Konieczny’s minutes with some combination of freshman guard Ryder Frost and sophomore guard Cole Certa. The Irish currently have 12 scholarship players on their 2025-26 roster entering Shrewsberry’s third season at the helm.
