After an impressive Shrine Bowl performance in Las Vegas and a notable NFL Combine appearance in Indianapolis, Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan has one final shot to show NFL leadership and scouts he is worthy of a spot on one of their rosters come April.

On Friday, Notre Dame will host Pro Day for its departing football players, including Coan.

Less than a week before the event, Irish offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tommy Rees spoke briefly on Saturday about what scouts will be looking for out of Coan on Friday.

“His 40,” Rees joked before answering the question in full.

Incase you missed it, Coan ran a pretty impressive 4.87 40-yard dash in Indianapolis.

“He probably won’t miss,” Rees added. “I think (the focus is going to be) how does he push the ball down the field? I think there’s going to be some throws that guys are going to want to see Jack make, and he’ll make them. I think some of the throws for him to change platform, do some things athletically, and then be able to draw drive the ball in that 25- to 35-yard range will be important.”

Coan struggled with the deep ball at times last season; he completed just 17 of 54 pass attempts of 20+ yards. The 6-3, 218-pound New York native was best throwing to the left outside of the numbers, going 7 of 16 for 232 yards with five touchdowns and zero interceptions. Throwing outside of the numbers to the right, however, he was just 5 of 22 with a touchdown and two interceptions.

The graduate transfer was best to his left side all year, going 28 of 32 for 220 yards with a score on throws between zero and 10 yards and 11 of 14 for 178 yards with a score between 10 and 20 yards. He did not throw an interception to his left side all season. Five of his seven picks were between the numbers.

Rees said Coan arrived in South Bend this weekend and will be working with his former offensive coordinator throughout this week.

There are plenty of NFL teams looking for an intelligent, hard-working quarterback who wants to come in and learn from one of the best. While Coan won’t be a Day 1 starter, he certainly adds value to any locker room. I would not be surprised if you hear his name called earlier rather than later on Saturday, April 30.
