Newsstand: Former Notre Dame OC Tommy Rees reportedly 'serious contender' for Alabama HC job
Alabama’s search for its next head coach is heating up, and according to one report, one of its top-three candidates has strong ties to Notre Dame. FootballScoop’s John Brice reported that former Notre Dame offensive coordinator and current Alabama OC Tommy Rees is a “serious contender” for the head coaching job at Alabama, along with Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer and Florida State head coach Mike Norvell.
Rees also played quarterback for the Irish from 2010-13.
“Just 31, Rees is the youngest among the Tide candidates,” Brice wrote. “He’s also a former Broyles Award finalist, an ex-Notre Dame quarterback and long considered among the sharpest young offensive minds in football. His father, Bill, is a legendary collegiate and NFL personnel expert.
“Rees owns NFL experience, and he’s burnished his coaching chops with offensive coordinator stops at two of the most high-profile spots in all of football: his alma mater, Notre Dame, from 2020-22, and this past season at Alabama. He helped Jalen Milroe engineer a remarkable turnaround at quarterback for the Tide, which upended Georgia in the SEC Championship and took Michigan to overtime in the CFP before losing to the top-seeded Wolverines.”

“He had the ability to move inside and outside the pocket. When the D-line tried to tackle him, he would just juke him and throw it quickly because he’s left-handed. It was just cool just watching him throw lefty while he was on the run. It was some crazy stuff he did.”
