Newsstand: Washington Commanders sign former Notre Dame OL Nick Martin
Former Notre Dame center Nick Martin’s latest stint as a free agent is over after 10 days. The Washington Commanders signed Martin to their 53-man roster Tuesday, they announced.
Martin was most recently with the New Orleans Saints, who released him from their practice squad Sept. 10. The Saints let him go during final cuts, but signed him to the practice squad the next day. He originally signed with New Orleans in July.

Martin will likely assume Washington’s backup center job. The Commanders made the move to get him after placing starter Chase Roullier on injured reserve Tuesday. He spent all of last season as the Las Vegas’ Raiders backup center.
A seventh-year pro, Martin was Notre Dame’s starting center from 2013-15 and a two-time captain for the Irish. The Houston Texans took him in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He started 62 of a possible 64 games from 2017-20.

Quote of the Day
“Certain guys need certain types of coaching in certain moments. I’m not proud of the language I used, but I know Drew can seek out and handle tough coaching and things to kind of light a fire and create a sense of urgency. In that moment, we felt like it was the right thing for the right player.”
