The No. 10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football program is firing on all cylinders to begin 2023. And the national media is cautiously taking notice. On Thursday, Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt recognized quarterback Sam Hartman for his hot start to his Irish campaign and analyzed this Saturday’s matchup against NC State.

“Hartman has been lights out for the Irish…” Klatt said. “If this was better competition, I’d be jumping on the table and talking about this is why Notre Dame is actually for real. This is why they can make a playoff push.

“In reality, it remains to be seen. This is a good test. Dave Doeren has a good thing going at NC State. They did get through their opening week, 24-14, over UConn. They have a transfer quarterback in Brennan Armstrong. He threw for 155 yards. Rushe dit for almost 100 in that one with a couple of touchdowns.

“This is going to be their first test, speaking of Notre Dame. I can’t wait to see it. They’re favored by 7 1/2. I actually think this is more real than it is hype. Even though their level of competition has been not great, to say the least. I think they go in there and cover this 7 1/2.

“I love their offensive line; I like their ability to run. And what Hartman gives them is their ability to feature what largely has been an overlooked skill position group. They have size and speed on the outside, and now they can go out there and accentuate that.”

Hartman, a Wake Forest transfer, has completed 33-40 passes (82.5%) for 445 yards, 6 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in just three halves this season. He did not play the final 30 minutes in Notre Dame’s 56-3 victory over Tennessee State last Saturday.

In three career games against the Wolfpack, Hartman’s connected on 72-131 (55.0%) passes for 923 yards, 6 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Wake Forest averaged 36 points in those outings despite losing two of three games.

Saturday’s game kicks off at Noon EDT on ABC.

“Only beat him by one, it was a race to six. It didn’t take many days for us to start to bond and start to mesh. It’s felt like he’s been here since I’ve been here.”
