On Friday afternoon soon after news broke that Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne would be entering the transfer portal, six Blue & Gold staff members — including former Irish captain Mike Goolsby — gave their reaction on the news and analyzed what’s next for the Fighting Irish in the immediate and long-term future at the quarterback position.

Tyler Horka, Blue & Gold: What QB Drew Pyne entering the transfer portal means for Notre Dame football

Nothing is certain in college football. Not in 2022. Not with the transfer portal, NIL and everything else that plays into an ever-changing, constantly evolving landscape. Let Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne serve as the prime example for that.

The rising senior quarterback announced his decision to enter the transfer portal Friday.

That leaves Notre Dame with three scholarship quarterbacks on its roster entering bowl season; sophomores Tyler Buchner and Ron Powlus III, and true freshman Steve Angeli. Buchner, who won an offseason competition versu Pyne, has not played a snap since suffering a regular season-ending shoulder injury Sept. 10. Head coach Marcus Freeman recently hinted that Buchner could be available for the Irish’s bowl bid.

Prior to Pyne’s announcement, it was assumed he’d get his 11th start in a row in the postseason no matter Buchner’s status. He finished the regular season with the nation’s No. 20 overall passer rating (155.3) and had 22 touchdown passes to just 6 interceptions. He completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 2,021 yards.

Now, the Irish’s starting situation is up in the air.

Buchner has been coming along in his rehab, but he was not practicing as a full-contact participant well into November. Running him onto the field as a starter in a bowl game could be a dicey proposition, especially given his injury history. Prior to his first start of this season, he hadn’t started a game at any level since his junior year of high school (2019).

Pete Thamel, ESPN: Notre Dame QB Drew Pyne decides to enter the transfer portal

(This was the orignal news-breaking report; the story was updated after Pyne announced the news)

Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne tweeted Friday that he is entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Pyne, who will have three years of eligibility at his next destination, is not planning to play in the team’s bowl game, sources told ESPN on Friday.

Pyne expressed his appreciation for the Irish football program and community in Friday’s social media post.

Pyne started 10 games for Notre Dame this season, leading them to an 8-2 record and finishing No. 20 nationally in individual quarterback efficiency. He threw 22 touchdown passes and six interceptions, rushing for 108 yards and two more scores while completing 64.6% of his passes.
