Notre Dame Stadium has been recognized as one of the premier gridiron’s in college football. On Thursday, ESPN surveyed 14 of its college football writers to determine the top 25 stadiums in the country. The network had them rank their top 20 stadiums: No. 1 was worth 20 points, No. 2 19 points and so on.

The home of the Fighting Irish checked in at No. 4 with 175 points.

“Since opening in 1930, Notre Dame Stadium has hosted some of college football’s most significant teams, players, coaches and moments,” Adam Rittenberg said. “But the venue is known as much for what lies just beyond its northern edge as for what’s inside.

“Since fall 1964, the ‘Word of Life’ mural on the university library tower has welcomed ball carriers to the north end zone. Known as ‘Touchdown Jesus,’ the mural depicts Jesus Christ with his arms raised, similar to the touchdown signal.

“Located a little more than a football field away from the Knute Rockne Gate, where Notre Dame players enter for each game, Touchdown Jesus is visible from a portion of seats in the south part of the stadium and is frequently shown in camera shots of Notre Dame contests.”

LSU’s Tiger Stadium claimed the first spot on the list by earning 247 of 280 points. The Rose Bowl and Michigan Stadium also had the edge over The House that Rockne Built. The complete rankings can be viewed here

“Listen, Riley’s a phenomenal quarterback. He’s a phenomenal competitor. He obviously played a huge role in our success at Duke. And in a lot of ways me getting this job here at Texas A&M. And so the irony of playing against him in the opener certainly isn’t lost on me.”
