When you win college football games in ugly fashion, odds are you can get rewarded in the polls much more handsomely than the way you’re received by your own fan base on social media and message boards. That was the case for Notre Dame this weekend.

The Fighting Irish didn’t pass the eye test for their fans in an often lackadaisical 28-3 victory over Miami (Ohio), but they received a boost in the rankings for the 25-point win. Notre Dame moved up to No. 14 in the Coaches Poll and No. 16 in the Associated Press Poll. Head coach Marcus Freeman‘s team was previously No. 18 in the former and No. 17 in the latter.

The Irish and Louisville Cardinals set up a ranked showdown in South Bend this weekend. Louisville is No. 15 in the AP Top 25 and No. 17 in the Coaches Poll. The Cards beat Notre Dame, 33-20, in Louisville last year. Freeman spent some time at the end of his postgame press conference yesterday making sure the media knew the Irish are well aware of the challenge that’s ahead.

“They know who we play,” Freeman said. “We know who we play next week. They will be ready to go.”

There is only one other currently ranked team remaining on Notre Dame’s schedule; USC, who lost by one score at Michigan on Saturday, is No. 13 in the AP Top 25 and No. 16 in the Coaches Poll. The Irish’s Week 1 opponent, Texas A&M, is No. 24 in both polls after winning three games in a row following the season-opening defeat to Notre Dame.
