Two teams ranked ahead of Notre Dame lost in Week 12. As a result, the Fighting Irish, who beat Virginia 35-14, were rewarded with a move up in the Sunday polls.

Notre Dame (9-1) is now No. 6 in the Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the Associated Press Poll.

The Irish started the season at No. 5 in the AP Top 25, but they fell well out of the top 15 with a Week 2 loss to Northern Illinois. They’ve won eight games in a row since then and have been steadily climbing back to where they began the year, one convincing victory at a time.

Notre Dame has only defeated one team that’s currently ranked in either poll — No. 14/15 Texas A&M. (7-2). The Irish beat Louisville and Navy when they were ranked, but both teams have since fallen out of the polls. This weekend, the Irish have a big game against No. 16/18 Army (9-0). It’s possible the Black Knights remain ranked even if the Irish beat them at Yankee Stadium.

After the penultimate regular season game of the year, head coach Marcus Freeman takes his team on the road to face USC (5-5) in Los Angeles in what could very well be a play-in game for the College Football Playoff from the perspective of Notre Dame. Beat Army and beat USC, and the Irish are in for sure. Only question then would come down to CFP seeding.
