After the summer camp circuit and half of a junior season of film to review, On3 updated its rankings for the 2024 class on Monday. And as always, there are big bumps and notable falls to report.
Of Notre Dame’s six commits, three rank inside On3’s top 300 players nationally. To be clear, this is On3’s own rankings, and not the On3 Consensus which we typically use at Blue & Gold when reporting a player’s ranking. On3’s rankings make up for a quarter of the On3 Consensus, which is an equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
The rise on the Notre Dame commit list is Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South wide receiver Cam Williams. He went from the No. 136 to No. 21 in the national rankings, which slots players regardless of position. In the receiver rankings, On3 now lists Williams as the No. 5 pass catcher in the land, up 12 spots.
Through the first seven games of his junior season, Williams hauled in 37 passes for 793 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s added 90 rushing yards and a score on the ground, too.
“The wide receiver group in 2024 is strong, and in going through that group, we thought Williams was one of the better ones we watched,” On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power told Blue & Gold. “We love his athleticism; he stands out in basketball and track as well. He’s having a very strong junior season.
“He has very good verified length, and that combined with his athleticism and how well he’s played this year has us excited about him. Notre Dame fans should be excited about him, too. He has the potential to be a difference-maker in their passing game.
“Moving forward with him, we’ll want to see him continue to hone his technically ability with his route running and ball skills. But we love his natural physical ability and how he’s putting it together on the field. We feel bullish on Cam Williams.”
Saline (Mich.) High quarterback and Irish pledge CJ Carr‘s ranking took a tumble, though. He now ranks as the No. 139 player nationally, falling from No. 31. He’s ranked as the No. 12 quarterback nationally per On3.
“There was a decent amount of movement within the quarterback rankings, and generally speaking, most of the quarterbacks who were in the top 100 trended down in this update,” Power said. “Some of that was because when we did the initial ranking, we had fewer players to rank, so naturally, you’ll have a lot of players jump up.
“With that said, Carr did fall within that quarterback group. His drop is a little larger than some of the others. It wasn’t something that we took lightly or made snap judgments on. I watched half of his full games from this season to try to hone in on how he looks as a junior. The areas we’d want to see improvement from is accuracy and being consistent. It seems like he’s aiming a little bit. The passing ability we saw in the camp setting as a sophomore is not really transferring on the field that much thus far as a junior. Handling pressure has given him some problems this year.

“Having watched his games, there’s a larger gap between the competition level with some of the teams he plays, so I made sure that I watched games he struggled in and games he played well in to get a good feel of how he’s playing in general and the talent level. And in comparing him with the group of quarterbacks, we felt that he should slide down. With our rankings, we value the most recent on-field sample size. So, the junior season is more important than the sophomore season.
“The rankings are fluid. Changes early on in the process are more drastic than they are late in it. This is not the final ranking. We’ll continue to monitor him and see how he progresses.”
West Bloomfield (Mich.) High defensive lineman Brandon Davis-Swain fell from No. 100 to No. 221 in the national rankings. He’s the No. 15 defensive lineman in the land.
Among the Notre Dame targets, Nashville (Tenn.) Lipscomb Academy’s Kaleb Beasley saw a major jump and now ranks as the No. 122 player nationally, up 88 spots. Beasley is the No. 12 cornerback nationally. Tennessee and Notre Dame are the top schools for Beasley according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM).
“I saw him at LSU’s camp over the summer, and he was very impressive there,” Power said. “His biggest strength is that he’s extremely smooth and natural in coverage. He’s polished and makes a ton of plays on the ball. His athleticism is solid, but that’s not his strongest attribute right now — it’s really just his pure, natural ability to stay attached to receivers in coverage.
“His instincts are fantastic. I would feel pretty good about his chances of being an early contributors in college with how far along he is as a cover cornerback. There’s not as much projection with him.”
