It was a mixed bag for Notre Dame last week. The Fighting Irish lost to Syracuse for the second time this season, this time on their home floor in South Bend, but then they went on the road and knocked off then-No. 8 UConn.

Notre Dame entered the week ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press poll. They begin a new one with games against Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh sitting at No. 14.

The Irish have been outside the top 10 since losing their season opener to South Carolina, falling as low as No. 19 in Week 11. As it stands, ESPN’s Charlie Creme views Notre Dame in an even dimmer light; he has the Irish on the outside looking in for the chance to host NCAA Tournament games at Purcell Pavilion as a top-four seed in the tourney.

It’s going to need to be less of what happened against Syracuse for head coach Niele Ivey’s team and more of what occurred against UConn for the Irish to get in position to host the first two rounds of the tournament for the second consecutive season. The opportunities are there to make a rise. Four of Notre Dame’s final 10 regular-season games are against teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25; two against No. 16 Louisville, one against No. 5 North Carolina State and one against No. 17 Virginia Tech.
