Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players and Ohio State coaches and staff members themselves. This week Caleb Burton, a highly-sought after receiver prospect from Texas, joins the show.

Brian Hartline and Ohio State have had a pretty good run when in the state of Texas.

The Buckeyes landed 5-star receiver Garrett Wilson in the Class of 2019 and 5-star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba in 2020. Now, the Ohio State receivers coach is hoping to strike gold again in the Lone Star State with the recruitment of Del Valle 5-star prospect Caleb Burton.

The country’s No. 1-ranked rising-junior wideout was offered by the Buckeyes in March and told Lettermen Row at the time that the offer meant a lot to him.

“Ohio State is the place to go, especially for a receiver,” Burton said then. “[The offer] means a lot because Ohio State is huge — huge — to me because it’s been one of my dream schools. They do a damn good job of sending wide receivers to the league, and then they are successful once they get there. It’s just a perfect fit with the offense they run, it’s perfect for a wide receiver.”

Del Valle is a suburb of Austin, and the Buckeyes are hoping that Burton’s relationship with Garrett Wilson — who also played his high school in the shadows of the University of Texas at Lake Travis High School — can provide a little boost in Ohio State’s direction. The two receivers have stayed in contact since early in the 6-foot-tall, 165-pound Burton’s high school career.

The push for an eventual commitment from Burton isn’t going to be easy for the Buckeyes. The top-ranked receiver has almost 40 scholarship offers already and is getting an early full-court press from Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and every other major program in the country.

What is going to matter the most in the recruitment of Caleb Burton? How does his relationship with Brian Hartline and Ohio State compare to the others right now? What is his timeline for an eventual decision and how did the Covid-19 summer change things on that front?

The 5-star talent talks about those things and more in the latest edition of Lettermen Row’s Birminology
