Carnell Tate loses black stripe following impressive spring scrimmage
COLUMBUS — Carnell Tate is only a few practices into his Ohio State career.
He is already turning heads in spring ball — just like he did as a four-star recruit on the trail just months ago.
Tate became the first member of the Buckeyes talented 2023 recruiting class to shed his black stripe, earning that honor shortly after Ohio State wrapped up its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday afternoon.
He was one of two Buckeyes to lose a black stripe after the scrimmage. Ole Miss transfer cornerback Davison Igbinosun was the other.
“Competitiveness,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “Both of those guys have competed. They’ve shown up for practice right from the first point.”
Tate is part of a four-man wide receiver recruiting class that also includes Bryson Rodgers, Noah Rogers and Brandon Inniss. Tate, Rodgers and Rogers are already in camp for Ohio State, but Inniss will arrive this summer. Inniss was spotted at practice on Saturday, watching from afar.
The four 2023 wide receivers join a crowded room, led by Marvin Harrison Jr and Emeka Egbuka. It will be the ultimate competition throughout the offseason, but if anyone has a shot at cracking the field early, it could be Tate or Inniss.

Tate made it a goal to come in and make an immediate impact for the Buckeyes. He even said as much when Lettermen Row saw him in January.
“As a child, I always grew up watching Ohio State and that’s where I’ve wanted to be since the eighth grade,” Tate told Lettermen Row‘s Matt Parker at the All-American Bowl. “It was the ultimate dream of mine and I’m blessed to achieve that.
“Coach Day, coach Hartline, they believe in me and I know they’re going to take my skill to another level.”
He appears to already be doing so — especially Saturday at the scrimmage. His hard work is paying off early in his career to show for it.
Carnell Tate has officially shed his black stripe for Ohio State.
