Signed: Jyaire Brown joins Buckeyes as versatile, physical cornerback
The Early-Signing Period is here and Ohio State is set to once again bring in one of the country’s best recruiting classes. Lettermen Row is tracking the Buckeyes recruiting news throughout the signing period as 2022 commitments officially join the Ohio State football program. The latest Letter of Intent is in: Jyaire Brown has signed with the Buckeyes.
COLUMBUS – Louisiana has historically not been a fertile recruiting ground for Ohio State, but the Buckeyes struck it big with Jyaire Brown.
Brown was living in the New Orleans area at the time of his April 2020 commitment to the Buckeyes before he eventually moved back to his native state of Ohio that summer. On Wednesday, Brown – who has played at Lakota West (Ohio) for the past two seasons – signed his Letter of Intent to officially join the Buckeyes.
What does this addition do for Ohio State? Let’s break it down.
Who is Jyaire Brown?
Jyaire Brown is a 5-foot-11, 177-pound cornerback who committed to Ohio State on April 22, 2020.
On3 Consensus Ranking: 167 overall, 21 CB, 8 Ohio
On3 Ranking: 273 overall, 29 CB, 11 Ohio
Hometown: West Chester, Ohio
High School: Lakota West
Scouting summary: “Jyaire Brown has the ability to play press-man or off-ball coverage, and while he is an outside cornerback by trade, Brown could certainly see snaps inside at the nickel position when he arrives at Ohio State. Where Brown really thrives are his instincts, short reaction time and uncanny short-area quickness. He has incredible make-up speed and is especially fast at diagnosing routes and jumping them.” – Rivals national analyst Sam Spiegelman told Lettermen Row

How did he end up at Ohio State?
Brown moved to Louisiana at a young age after spending his first several years born and raised in Ohio. He said that Ohio State was his “dream offer” as he rose through the high school ranks, and he didn’t wait to cash in on it. Just five days after he was became one of the first cornerbacks to receive an offer from the Buckeyes, he ended his recruitment by verbally committing.
Since that spring 2020 commitment, though, there was a back-and-forth concerning how strong that pledge was. Brown kept in contact with other programs, mainly Notre Dame, and the Fighting Irish were at the forefront of an attempted flip.
But Brown has an incredibly tight relationship with Buckeyes assistant coach and fellow Cincinnati native Kerry Coombs, and that relationship carried through to the end of Brown’s recruitment. A turning point for Brown came during his official visit to Ohio State in June, and he never looked back.
