Carnell Tate scores in return to Chicago, Buckeyes extend lead before the half

Wide receiver Carnell Tate is a Chicago native and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said this week that he wanted to win the game for sophomore pass catcher.

Well, the Buckeyes got Tate a touchdown too. On 2nd-and-8 from the Northwestern 25-yard line quarterback Will Howard connected Carnell Tate for a score. Ohio State extend its lead to 21-7 over Northwestern with less than a minute left to play in the first half.

Bad snaps on consecutive plays by Northwestern, one by the center and one by the long snapper, sets the Ohio State offense up with the ball at the Wildcats 1-yard line.

The Buckeyes got stopped for no gain on a quarterback sneak on the first play of the drive. Will Howard handed it off to Quinshon Judkins on the next play and he once again found the end-zone. Ohio State leads Northwestern 14-7 in the second quarter.

Ohio State responses to Northwestern’s touchdown drive with one of their own.

After converting a 4th-and-3 at the Wildcats 43-yard line, quarterback Will Howard connected with wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate for two receptions to get Ohio State down to the 1-yard line. Howard then handed it off running back Quinshon Judkins for the touchdown. Buckeyes tie it up at 7-7 half way through the second quarter.

Despite being backed up at their own 8-yard line, the Northwestern marched down the field against the Ohio State defense and opened the score. The Wildcats went 92 yards on 13 plays and Jack Lausch capped the drive off with an eight yard touchdown. Northwestern Leads Ohio State 7-0 early in the second quarter.

Northwestern fumbles away promising first possession

Ohio State won the coin toss and deferred to the second half so Northwestern got the ball to open the game.

The Wildcats went 59 yard on 11 plays on their opening possession but the Buckeyes were able to force a turnover. On 3rd-and-7 from the Ohio State’s 18-yard line, defensive end Jack Sawyer knocked the ball out of hands of Northwestern quarterback Jack Lausch and cornerback Davison Igbinosun recovered the ball. The Buckeyes defense keeps the Wildcats off the scoreboard.

Mitchell Melton out for Buckeyes at Northwestern

Ohio State will be without one of their better backup defensive linemen against Northwestern. Defensive end Mitchell Melton has been ruled out for Saturday, according to the official availability report released by the program.

Ryan Field at Northwestern is undergoing renovations which has forced the Wildcats to play at two different venues this season. Northwestern played its first five home games at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, a temporary stadium on their out practice field. The Wildcats will now play their final two home games at Wrigley Field which is where they will host Ohio State on Saturday.

Lettermen Row’s Spencer Holbrook and Tim May are at the historic baseball stadium today to watch the Buckeyes battle the Wildcats.
