COLUMBUS — Luke Farrell was never in the spotlight at Ohio State.
The closest the tight end ever got to the John Mackey Award was the preseason watch list. Not because he wasn’t one of the best tight ends in college football, because he wasn’t making the flashiest plays. Farrell might be one of the top blocking tight ends in his class this year, and the Jacksonville Jaguars believe that.
The Jaguars used their latest selection to take the Ohio State product off the board with the No. 145 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft on Saturday.
For three years as a starter at Ohio State, Farrell was a reliable blocker in the running game, never hesitant to do the dirty work and make a key block when necessary. Plus, he’s capable of contributing in the passing game.

“I try not to take offense to it,†he said after Ohio State’s Pro Day. “I understand my value at the next level. I think a lot of coaches and GMs understand that as well. Doesn’t have to be flashy, but I know I can do what they ask me to do and at a high level.

“I think that was part of it, just to show my versatility and really show what I’m capable of in the pass game. I think I’m the best blocking tight end in the draft. I think I’m more than capable in the pass game and I’ve showed by capitalizing on the opportunities I got.â€
The Jags have now drafted a tight end who could have a long NFL career.
Farrell can create holes for running backs and protect passers as well as any offensive lineman. But he can be a weapon in the passing game, which he showed in glimpses throughout his Ohio State career, such as his spectacular touchdown catch against Clemson in the College Football Playoff this past season.
He helped the Buckeyes win four-consecutive Big Ten Championships. And now he’s off to the Jacksonville, where he’ll prove worthy of helping Jacksonville win AFC South crowns.
