Big Ten moving future conference basketball tournament to Minneapolis
COLUMBUS — The Big Ten Basketball Tournament is on the move again.
After primarily holding the tournament in Indianapolis and Chicago, the league will hold the 2024 Big Ten Basketball Tournament at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The women’s tournament will be in Minneapolis next March, and both men’s and women’s hoops will have their tournaments there March 2024.
Minneapolis has never hosted the Big Ten Tournament.
The conference tournament has been held in four other sites in its history. It was in Washington D.C. in 2017 and New York City in 2018. All other tournaments have been in Chicago and Indianapolis.
The league will hold the 2023 men’s tournament in Chicago at the United Center before moving north the next year. It was held in Indianapolis at Gainbridge Fieldhouse last month.
Commissioner Kevin Warren also announced the Big Ten football title game won’t be moving from Indianapolis soon.
“We are thrilled to bring marquee conference events such as the Big Ten Football Championship Game and the Big Ten Basketball Tournaments to world-class cities and venues within the conference footprint,” Warren said in a statement released by the league. “Indianapolis and Minneapolis each have a strong history and tradition of hosting some of the world’s premier events in cities that feature an exceptional base of Big Ten Conference alumni and fans. We look forward to creating new memories and experiences for our student-athletes, coaches, and member institutions, further expanding our fanbase, cultivating relationships with the business community, and fostering a positive and lasting impact on these cities.”

Ohio State has won the Big Ten Tournament five times since it began in 1998. The Buckeyes won it in 2002, 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2013. Since then, though, the Buckeyes have reached the title game of the Big Ten Tournament just once.
They were the runners up in 2021 after falling to Illinois in overtime in the championship game.
Ohio State was bounced in in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament last month by Penn State in an upset. Buckeyes coach Chris Holtmann is still searching for his first league tournament title. The Buckeyes have been in four league tournaments under Holtmann — with some success.
Holtmann knows he’s not judged on the Big Ten Tourmament, rather the NCAA Tournament is the barometer for success. But he still values what the conference tournament can do.
After one more year in a familiar site, the Buckeyes will be in the 2024 Big Ten Tournament, one that will take place in a new setting: Minneapolis.
