COLUMBUS — Ohio State only played one game last week, but the Buckeyes made it count.

After a dominant performance Sunday against Maryland, Chris Holtmann’s program stayed in the same spot the latest AP poll. After checking in at No. 16 a week ago, Ohio State landed at No. 16 again this Monday.

The Buckeyes are working to find consistency on the court in a season that’s been anything but. After losing four games earlier this season because of Covid-19 health protocols, Ohio State was forced to postpone last Thursday night’s scheduled home game with Iowa because of inclement weather. That has made every game count even more than normal for the Buckeyes.

Assistant coach Jake Diebler, speaking the media on Saturday, made sure to underline that point.

This Ohio State team is just trying to play when they’re planning to play.

“The hardest part for us as a staff is it’s been hard to get into a rhythm as a team,” Diebler said. “I felt like we were really starting to play well when we had our first extended break before Christmas. And clearly it took us some time, when we came back from that, to get back to where we were before the break.

“As we were getting back, when we felt like we were getting into a rhythm again, then our Nebraska game gets canceled and we had a stretch where we didn’t play a game in nine days. And now here we are again in a similar situation.”

It’s a situation that the Ohio State coaching staff hopes won’t happen again. The first step toward normalcy is pair of road games this week. Ohio State takes its Big Ten title pursuit on the road this week to Rutgers and Michigan. The Buckeyes play the Scarlet Knights on Wednesday night and the Wolverines on Saturday afternoon.

With Ohio State staying at No. 16 in the latest AP poll, the Big Ten claims five schools in the most recent Top 25. Auburn has maintained its place atop the poll with Gonzaga, Purdue, Arizona and Kentucky rounding out the top five.
