COLUMBUS — Two of the last three times Ohio State faced a good, NCAA Tournament-caliber team, it was ran out of the gym by Maryland and Auburn.

How was Saturday different? Maybe it’s inexplicable — but it happened. Ohio State went toe-to-toe with No. 5 Kentucky inside Madison Square Garden and came out with an incredible 85-65 upset win over the Wildcats.

First-year Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler has his signature win early in his Buckeyes career.

Ohio State shot 57 percent from the floor. Star guard Bruce Thornton had 30 points to lead the Buckeyes, who were also lifted by John Mobley’s 15 points and Kentucky transfer Aaron Bradshaw’s 11 points in his return to the court.

The Buckeyes will close out the 2024 calendar and nonconference action with a home game against Indiana State on Dec. 29 before diving into Big Ten play for the remainder of the regular season. All of a sudden, the Buckeyes look like they may be a factor in a tough Big Ten conference thanks to the performance against the Wildcats.
