Buckeyes officially miss College Football Playoff, await bowl assignment
COLUMBUS — Ohio State needed quite a bit of chaos to get back into the College Football Playoff field.
But the Buckeyes got none of it. They needed an Oklahoma State win over Texas, a Georgia win over Alabama and a Louisville win over Florida State. Those results, in the Buckeyes’ eyes, went 0-3. Ohio State is not going to the College Football Playoff.
No, the Buckeyes instead finished outside the top four in the final College Football Playoff rankings, which were revealed Sunday and gave the sport its final four-team field. The teams left to compete for a national title are No. 1 Michigan, which will play No. 4 Alabama and No. 2 Washington, which will face No. 3 Texas.
Florida State finished in the fifth spot, the first team out. Then it was Georgia. That expected seventh spot is the lowest the Buckeyes have been in the CFP rankings since they began being released in late October.
Ohio State had a prime chance to get in the four team field without any help on Championship Saturday. The Buckeyes played Michigan for the Big Ten East title just last week and came up short. So instead of being the No. 1 seed in a winnable CFP bracket, the Buckeyes will be heading to a consolation bowl prize they certainly won’t feel good about playing in.

That’ll either be Peach Bowl, which is unlikely because they played in that game last year, the Fiesta Bowl or the Cotton Bowl. Ohio State has good history at both, having won multiple Fiesta Bowls and winning the Cotton Bowl in 2017.
But the bottom line is this: Ohio State expects to be in the College Football Playoff. It had a chance to do so on its own and missed that opportunity. And the help the Buckeyes needed to get in this weekend, well, didn’t show up for them either.
