COLUMBUS — Ohio State beat Michigan State with ease on Saturday to move to 10-0 on the season.

Turns out that even with that big win, the Buckeyes didn’t do enough to impress the College Football Playoff committee. That panel of powerful folks decided Georgia’s win over Ole Miss has officially pushed the Bulldogs over the Buckeyes in the latest CFP rankings.

Yes, after two weeks at the top of the sport, the Buckeyes checked in at No. 2 in the latest rankings, which were released Tuesday night.

Georgia took over the top spot. The Bulldogs are followed by Ohio State, Michigan, Florida State, Washington and Oregon, all of which round out the top six.

Two teams Ohio State beat are in the top 25. Notre Dame checked in at No. 19 and Penn State sits at No. 12. Both of those wins give the Buckeyes an impressive resume, and they’ll get a chance to add to it against No. 3 Michigan and potentially in the Big Ten title game — if they make it — against the winner of the Big Ten West division, which is expected to be No. 16 Iowa.

Ohio State truly does not care about the rankings. The Buckeyes would much rather just be playing their best football at the end of the year and see if that lands them in the final four-team field in early December.

“Since we entered November, we know that we want to be playing our best football in November,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “And you can go through the season where the days seem long, but the weeks go by real fast and then here you are at the end of the season. And so urgency has to be at an all-time high. We know we have to be on point and we have to be playing our best right now. And I think the guys feel that, they understand that.

“So we have to be better than everybody else in the country of just focusing on maximizing ourselves, doing a great job preparing for Minnesota. And you know ignore everything else that comes around.”

The weekly College Football Playoff rankings are part of the noise Ohio State is blocking out. But the fact that the Buckeyes are still near the top is a good sign that the committee respects what they’ve done to date.

And the fact that Ohio State fell gives it plenty of motivation.
