Buckeyes remain No. 1 in second CFP rankings release
COLUMBUS — Ohio State opened the first set of College Football Playoff rankings last week as the top-ranked team in the country.
The committee watched the Buckeyes win over Rutgers and decided they should remain as the top team again this week.
The Buckeyes still top the rankings, while Georgia, Michigan and Florida State rounded out the top four just two weeks into the rankings releases.
Washington and Oregon, two Pac 12 teams that will join the Big Ten next season, are the first two teams out. They’re at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Of course, Ohio State is saying all of the right things right now. The Buckeyes don’t care about those rankings one bit, although it’s nice that the committee recognizes how good this team has been — and the high-level games it has won through nine contests.
But the Buckeyes are focused on Michigan State, Minnesota and then The Game against Michigan. They’re not going to get into the business of worrying where they fall in the meaningless rankings.
“I think you have so many guys on our team that have just kind of been through all this before,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said Tuesday. “And they know it means absolutely nothing. And their goal is to win the whole thing and to be the No. 1 team at the end of the year. So we want to win them all. And that’s all that matters. And so, at the end, they’ll rank us but we’re just going to try to win them all. And, you know, that continues this Saturday.”

Ohio State isn’t going to pay attention to rankings until after the Big Ten title game. If the Buckeyes keep winning, they’ll be in the College Football Playoff. And until then, the rankings truly don’t mean anything inside the walls of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
