Buckeyes stay put in latest College Football Playoff rankings
COLUMBUS — A win is a win for Ohio State.
Yes, the latest checkmark in the win column for the Buckeyes wasn’t convincing. But if Ryan Day’s program just wins out, it’ll be in the College Football Playoff, plain and simple.
The Buckeyes are still unblemished and undefeated, and the CFP committee is taking notice of the Big Ten’s premier program. They’re No. 2 in the second batch of rankings on Tuesday night, trailing only Georgia, which badly beat former No. 1 Tennessee on Saturday.
Ohio State is one of four Big Ten teams to show up in the second rankings. Rival Michigan slid up to No. 3, and the Wolverines will show up for a massive Big Ten East showdown against Ohio State on Nov. 26.
Penn State moved up to No. 14, while Illinois is still ranked No. 21 despite being upset by Michigan State last weekend.
Oh, and Ohio State’s season-opening opponent, Notre Dame, has earned an invite to the rankings discussion. After losing to the Buckeyes — and then suffering embarrassing losses to Marshall and Stanford, the Fighting Irish have beaten North Carolina, Syracuse and former top-four team Clemson. Notre Dame checked in at No. 20.

This released poll comes after the Buckeyes remained in the top three of the AP Top 25 following another win over Northwestern on Saturday. And after another notch in the win column, that’s exactly where Ohio State will stay in both the AP Poll and the new College Football Playoff rankings.
The Buckeyes received fewer first-place votes in the AP Poll on Sunday, and now the rankings that will ultimately matter at the end of the season are released. They’re near the top of the CFP rankings as the process continues.
And if Ohio State is still undefeated three weeks from now, it will be in the national title picture at the very end.
