New structure to spring practice

When the Buckeyes hit the practice field Monday to open a four-week, 15-practice stretch in March and April, it’s not going to look like what we know spring practice to be from the past. It’s going to be different.

“You have 15 opportunities, and in the past those were all padded practices, very physical,” Day said Friday, just 10 days before spring ball opens up. “That will not be the case, for sure, this spring. We’ll use some helmeted practices, almost like OTA-style to take some of those. There will be more teaching opportunities to be smart there.”

Ohio State doesn’t need an entire set of spring practice sessions featuring 11-on-11 full-hitting sessions and Oklahoma drills. The Buckeyes are going to be smart about how they approach the coming few weeks, especially considering they want to play another 16-game season next year after just wrapping one up two months ago.

Day likes what he has coming back because while the program lost 17 players from its national championship run, this next edition of the roster features plenty of returning impact players who will now step into even bigger roles. m With so many Buckeyes coming back after playing key roles for a championship team, Ohio State is finding new ways to structure March and April.
