COLUMBUS — Ohio State made its assistant hires during the last two weeks — but the program didn’t make those hires official.

The Buckeyes have now done so.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day announced the following hires for the next edition of the coaching staff:

+ Matt Patricia, who won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, including two as the team’s defensive coordinator, as defensive coordinator.
+ Tyler Bowen will be the new Ohio State offensive line coach and run game coordinator. He most recently served as Virginia Tech’s offensive coordinator and quarterback’s coach but has experience coaching tight ends, quarterbacks, offensive line and other spots along the offensive side of the football.

Day had this to say about the hire of Patricia, through a release from Ohio State athletics: “I have been aware of and followed Matt’s successful NFL career for the past 15 years, or when he first started calling plays for those outstanding New England teams. I have also gotten to know him and, aside from his creative and outstanding abilities as a defensive coach, I think Matt is going to integrate into our program’s culture and values, which are the essence of who we are, very well. I’d like to welcome him and his wife, Raina, and their children to Columbus and Ohio State University.”

Day had this to say about the hire of Bowen, through a release from Ohio State athletics: “I am really pleased to announce the addition of Tyler Bowen, and his family, to our coaching staff. He’s a terrific coach who will bring experience to the staff along with an excellent record as a recruiter.”

Day also announced the following promotions from the staff already with the program Thursday:

+ Brian Hartline has officially been promoted to offensive coordinator to go along with his wide receivers coaching title
+ Keenan Bailey is the co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach
+ Program assistant/quality control coach Billy Fessler, who worked closely coaching and working with Will Howard this past season, has earned the promotion to quarterback’s coach,
+ Safeties coach Matt Guerrieri has been promoted to pass game coordinator. He will continue to coach safeties
+ Secondary and cornerbacks coach Tim Walton has been promoted to co-defensive coordinator and will continue to coach in the secondary secondary, primarily with cornerbacks

Day said this about Hartline in the release from Ohio State athletics: “Brian did some of his best coaching this past season. His loyalty and patience are going to pay off, and I think he’s going to be the best coordinator in the country.”

Ohio State is, of course, replacing offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Chip Kelly. The Buckeyes play-caller from last season left to become the offensive coordinator of the Las Vegas Raiders. The Buckeyes are also replacing defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who took a lucrative new job as the defensive coordinator at Penn State after winning the national championship with Ohio State this past season. In addition to those losses, the Buckeyes are also replacing offensive line coach Justin Frye, who took the same position with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.

Now the new hires for all three of those losses — and a few promotions — have been made official by Ryan Day and Ohio State.
