Buckeyes safety Bryson Shaw enters transfer portal
COLUMBUS — Ohio State safety Bryson Shaw went from starter last season to backup as the depth chart began to shake out this spring.
So he will move on and look for a new place to become a contributor. Shaw entered the transfer portal, Lettermen Row confirmed. Shaw is the second member of the Ohio State secondary to leave the program Monday after Lejond Cavazos did so earlier in the day.
A former three-star recruit, Shaw rose up the depth chart and became a starter last season for the Buckeyes following the injury to first-team safety Josh Proctor. Shaw started nearly every game last season, appearing in all 13. He had 59 total tackles, an interception in the rivalry loss to Michigan, three passes deflected and a fumble recovery.
Shaw was one of the most important pieces of a young defense trying to hold itself together, but one that struggled with the best offenses it faced. He took the blame for the defensive struggles at times last season, publicly making sure he voiced that the defense could be better. Shaw became a vocal leader last season at Ohio State.
“There’s still a lot to improve on,” Shaw said after Ohio State lost to Michigan. “They hit that post right over my head. That can never happen. Never, ever, ever happen. And it won’t happen again. That’s my job to be back there. I’ve got to do my job. I’ve got to be better at that, and I’ll get it corrected … I thought the game-plan coming in was strong. I thought [Matt] Barnes, [Kerry] Coombs and the whole defensive staff gave us the right plan. Some of just didn’t do our jobs, including myself. We’ll get it corrected. We’ll get on that film, get it corrected and we’ll be fine.”

Shaw certainly had big, bright moments for the Buckeyes, as well, such as the interception early in the Michigan game.
The Ohio State defense is working to correct the mistakes from a year ago, and Shaw figured to be a part of a loaded secondary that features talented players at every position. As the Buckeyes took a transfer safety and others started getting healthier, Shaw began to slip down the depth chart.
And now, he’s in the transfer portal. He will try to find a new home to become a starter once again at the college level.
