COLUMBUS — Ohio State has waited 370 days for this rematch.

The Fiesta Bowl loss to Clemson a year ago left a bad taste in the mouths of every member of the Buckeyes roster. Ohio State led 16-0 in the first half, struggled in the red zone, had a late fumble return for a touchdown overturned and a chance to win the game at the end.

Now, a year later, Ohio State gets the opportunity it wanted to avenge that loss. The Buckeyes and Tigers will face off in the bayou on New Year’s Day in the Sugar Bowl semifinal.

“The goal was to get back into this situation,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “We were in the same situation a year ago, and once that game was over, we wanted to get back here. How we got back here was just amazing. The journey that we’ve gone on as a program to get back to right here, to have another chance to play Clemson in this game, you can’t even make it up.

“Some of the best storytellers of all time couldn’t come up with this story.”

Ohio State enters as 6-0 Big Ten Conference champions and a rare touchdown underdog to 10-1 Clemson. The Buckeyes were 7-0 as an underdog since 2012 before their loss to Clemson last December.

“It’s the second year we’re playing them in a row,” Day said Monday. “And they’ve won two national championships here. I think it’s four of the last five years they’ve been in it. I think they won six ACC championships, if I’m correct. They’ve been right at the top of the game for almost a decade now. So they’re up there. 

 “And then when you look at where Ohio State has been in the Big Ten and playing in the CFP and our games against Clemson, if we continue to win, we’re probably going to run into Clemson or Alabama along the way. So rivalry? We’re not in the same conference. But certainly if we move on, we’re going to see these guys.  It’s always great to get to this point and play against a great competitor like Clemson.”

Justin Fields threw for 320 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in last year’s semifinal. Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave combined for 97 receiving yards and a touchdown.
