Buckeyes safety Jayden Bonsu will enter transfer portal
COLUMBUS — Ohio State safety Jayden Bonsu has entered the transfer portal.
He will have three seasons of eligibility wherever he ends up playing next.
Jayden Bonsu is one of two Ohio State first-year safeties who joined the program last June. The other, Cedrick Hawkins Jr., transferred to UCF last offseason. Both committed to play for now-former Ohio State safeties coach and current Toledo cornerbacks coach Perry Eliano.
Before starting his Buckeyes career, Bonsu was the No. 4 New Jersey prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Bonsu turned in a productive final two seasons at St. Peter’s Prep, which also produced current Ohio State linebacker Cody Simon.
The 6-foot-2, 207-pound Bonsu mounted 62 total tackles, 7.5 TFLs, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two picks as a junior. Then, as a senior, he reached the 70-tackle mark in just 10 games, pitching in 2.5 sacks, 4.5 TFLs and an interception. Bonsu has good length and played in the box, in the slot and up high at St. Peter’s Prep.
Bonsu earned some first-team safety reps this offseason as Lathan Ransom worked back from a foot injury, and Bonsu looked like he could be in line to push for a role this season during the spring.

“He’s been a guy that’s been on the rise,” Buckeyes safeties coach Matt Guerrieri said in the spring. “To me, from where he was when he started spring ball to where he is now, he’s made more plays at practice. His eye discipline is better. His understanding of the defense is better, which allows you to be able to play free and play fast.
“That’s what I’ve seen so far, and I expect that to continue.”
But that never materialized for Bonsu. Now he’s entering the transfer portal to find his next college football stop after two seasons at Ohio State.
