Viewing Guide: How to watch Buckeyes primetime trip to Penn State
COLUMBUS — Every other year, Ohio State travels to Penn State to play a primetime game in front of 105,000 fans dressed in white, all of them trying to make every trip to Happy Valley as unpleasant as possible.
But this year there will be no White Out. There will be no screaming fans, no marching band, nor a blip of scarlet for a receiver to point to after running untouched on a bubble screen. Normally, the Buckeyes’ biennial trip to Beaver Stadium would loom large over the rest of the schedule. With no road atmosphere to contend with and Penn State dropping its opening game at Indiana, this year’s matchup takes a slightly different tone.
Still, this is the first road test in an abnormal season for Ohio State, and it comes against its toughest conference challenger over the last four years.Â
“When you watch the film, other than the scoreboard, they outplayed Indiana in terms of yardage,†Ohio State coach Ryan Day said Monday. “They really played well for the majority of that game, and then it just got away from them at the end. But they’re good, they’re good really in all areas. I think they’re very good. So we’re going to have to do a great job this week of giving the guys a plan: Playing clear, clean, concise in terms of our plan and then going out there and executing it.
“To go on the road, I know it’s not going to be a White Out, but still. Going to Happy Valley, 7:30 on a Saturday night, it’s going to be a big challenge.”
Ohio State won last year’s game 28-17 behind a pair of touchdown passes from Justin Fields. The previous two games against the Nittany Lions were decided by a combined two points.
“The goal is to win the game, it can’t be anything else,†Day said. “Like I told the guys, the last few years here it’s taken until the last play of the game to go win, and that’s got to be the expectation.â€
