COLUMBUS — Ohio State backup quarterback Devin Brown will enter the transfer portal when it opens on Monday morning.

Brown will remain with the Buckeyes through the College Football Playoff.

“After many long conversations with my family and careful consideration of my future, I have decided to enter the transfer portal following this season,” Brown said on social media. “I am beyond grateful for my time at Ohio State. It has truly been an honor to wear the Scarlet and Gray. The memories and lifelong relationships I have formed here will always be cherished. I want to extend my sincere thanks to Coach Day and all the coaches who have supported me during my time in Columbus.

“I entered this season with the intent of doing everything I could to win a National Championship with my brothers, and that goal is still very much alive. I will remain with the team and honor my commitment for the remainder of the season as we pursue our goal of winning it all.”

The third-year quarterback will have three years of eligibility remaining wherever he chooses to go.

Brown joined the program as a freshman in 2022 and has played in 16 games for the Buckeyes, completing 26 of 46 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns.

As a recruit, Brown was a five-star prospect ranked No. 31 overall in the 2022 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was also ranked as the No. 5 quarterback and No. 1 recruit from Utah. Brown was the No. 1 overall player in the class according to On3.

But he was never able to win the starting quarterback job for Ohio State. Brown sat behind C.J. Stroud and Kyle McCord during his freshman season, then lost the battle for the starting role to McCord in 2023 and again to Kansas State transfer Will Howard this offseason.

When he did have a chance to flash, Brown made an impact. He famously had rushing touchdowns last season as a change-of-pace rushing quarterback before he injured his ankle. He hurt it again in the first quarter of the Buckeyes’ loss to Missouri last December in the Cotton Bowl; he left the game in the first quarter and did not return.

Brown made one of the biggest and best highlight plays of the season this fall, coming in for an injured Will Howard on the road at Michigan State on Sept. 28 and firing a pass to freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith, who hauled it in with one hand for a ridiculous touchdown grab.

But after three years and two quarterback battles, Devin Brown is on his way out of the Ohio State football program. Like usual, though, Brown will honor his word. He’s sticking around for the Buckeyes’ College Football Playoff run, however long it may last.
