COLUMBUS — In the summer of 2019, Ohio State welcomed in Joe Royer and Luke Lachey for a one-day recruiting camp showdown to determine which player the Buckeyes would offer a scholarship too.

That day it was Royer who walked away with the coveted spot in the Ohio State class of 2020 after a dominant performance in front of the Buckeyes coaching staff.

The competition that begins on Wednesday won’t be quite as pressing — Ohio State does have a tight end already committed in 2023 — but it will be interesting. Kevin Wilson will host a pair of 2023 tight ends for camp that are each very interested in becoming the complementary piece to Ty Lockwood in this recruiting cycle. Whether or not either player gets that chance will be up to them.

We here at Lettermen Row have included Jackson McGohan as a real option for the Buckeyes for months. Here’s what we wrote about three weeks ago about the tight end position.

Whether or not another tight end joins the fray in 2023 is going to be interesting to watch. Ohio State loves Walker Lyons from Folsom (Calif.) High School and is also still a contender for Oregon’s Riley Williams. Williams included the Buckeyes in his top schools last month but hasn’t been to Columbus in over a year. I still believe there’s a path to an offer for Miamisburg (Ohio) High School standout Jackson McGohan. The Cincinnati commit is going to make a few camp stops in June and if he shows up at Ohio State I think his athleticism and upside could be intriguing for the Buckeyes.

What has become clear is that Ohio State clearly wants another tight end in its 2023 recruiting class. The names listed above are all still real options for the Buckeyes. Williams and Lyons will each make an official visit in June. Wilson offered a new 2023 tight prospect, Olsen Henry, just last week. That wouldn’t be happening if the intention to add another wasn’t clear.

That intention will be put to the test on Wednesday. Vance Bolyard has been in contact with Kevin Wilson for months and regularly so. He will camp side-by-side with McGohan, a Cincinnati commit, and each player is coming for a reason. It’s a business trip for both players and the goal is simple: land an Ohio State offer.

The month of June will see a number of tight ends coming through the Buckeyes campus. That will start on Wednesday. If Vance Bolyard or Jackson McGohan have their way, Wednesday is all that Ohio State will need to find its second 2023 tight end.
