Viewing Guide: How to watch Ohio State in primetime against Rutgers
COLUMBUS — Greg Schiano is back in town.
Following a dominating but imperfect road win at Penn State, Ohio State return to Columbus for a November slate of tuneup games — and it will start against a familiar face with Schiano leading Rutgers.
The Buckeyes are rolling into that matchup against the East Division opponent. Most Buckeyes who saw the field against Penn State graded as champions — except the defensive secondary. Penalties were also an issue for Ohio State, picking up nine for 80 yards. Even then, the game was never in doubt.
“I would say it was a big step forward, to win this game on the road was a huge step for us,†Ohio State coach Ryan Day said after the game Saturday. “But there’s a lot to be done. Absolutely, there’s a lot to be done. We’ll just keep going back to work. But I think that’s really encouraging, that there’s a lot of work to be done and you still play like this and win like this.â€
Schiano, the former Ohio State defensive coordinator now in his second stint in charge of Rutgers, led the Scarlet Knights to their first Big Ten win since 2017 in the season-opening game at Michigan State. Schiano’s team travels to Columbus as nearly 40-point underdogs.
In the six years that Rutgers has been in the Big Ten, the Buckeyes have beaten the Scarlet Knights by an average score of 55-8. Nonetheless, the Scarlet Knights have looked better this season.
“[Rutgers is] very different than last year,†Day said Monday on 97.1 The Fan. “Greg’s done a really good job of bringing in some guys from transfers and upgrading the talent. They got a big win that first game against Michigan State, which turned around and beat That Team Up North. I think he’s building something and he’s done a good job of upgrading the talent.Â
“This is not going to be the same team we played the last couple years. I think it’s a little bit different, too, we don’t have a year or two worth of film to go back upon.â€
