NFL will keep calling, but Ryan Day solidified his Ohio State future

The only person who knows what Ryan Day truly wants to accomplish in his career has already made his current intentions clear.
Day wants to put down roots at Ohio State. He’s also got a rich, new contract extension that will keep him in place for at least six years, and there’s no reason to doubt that Day will be honoring that deal and sticking around with the Buckeyes for the foreseeable future.
That won’t stop NFL teams from having interest in him, and every year he continues to win at Ohio State will ensure that his name will get attached to any openings at the next level. That’s just going to be the expectation from now on, and Day clearly knew that was coming when the Washington Redskins were believed to have interest in him in the middle of last season.
“I think being in a place like Ohio State, any time there’s success, things like this are going to come up,†Day said in October. “I don’t really ever want to talk about any of that stuff. I love it here. This is where I want to be.

“Whether it’s good, bad or indifferent, even for the next five, 10, hopefully 20 years while I’m here, I really don’t want to comment on any of that. Because I don’t think it’s good for anybody.â€

It’s entirely possible that at some point a professional franchise will dump a load of gold bricks in his driveway to try to entice him to take his innovative offensive mind back to the highest level. Day is also allowed to change his mind and alter his career goals over time, and certainly that could happen at some point as well.
But it’s probably not going to be any time soon considering how badly he wants his kids to grow up and live in one place for a while. Based on how much work his wife is putting into the community and how invested she obviously was in the Buckeyes based on the tears in the tunnel at the Fiesta Bowl, she doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to leave Columbus either. And for Day himself, it’s definitely premature to even entertain those ideas when he’s still only been a head coach for one season — and he doesn’t even have the national championship ring that will always be the top goal for the program.
Plenty would have to change for Day before any of those NFL offers could truly become serious options for him. It’s not possible to rule it out permanently, but he’s made it quite easy to dismiss any rumors linking him to the next level for the next few years both with his words and his signature on a new contract.
As long as Ryan Day keeps winning with the Buckeyes, he’s always going to be a coveted commodity. But he’s also got a great thing going while working in one of the premier football jobs at any level, and it’s hard to envision him willingly giving that up any time soon.
