COLUMBUS — It’s not as if Ryan Day burst through saloon doors headed into the 2024 Ohio State football season simply looking for a fight, but an enhanced “go for it” audacity has been apparent from the jump. And never more so than last week in the 38-7 Big Ten-opening win at Michigan State. One can point at the two fourth-down conversions that went for touchdowns as the main proof, but it was a scoring play late in the second quarter that truly told the tale. Quarterback Will Howard had been knocked to the ground, the breath knocked out of him by a Michigan State defender. Howard had to leave the game. In trotted backup Devin Brown, after a couple of hurried warmup throws, and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, with clearance no doubt from Day, called the play.
