Top-ranked running back cancels Ohio State official visit
The Buckeyes had been a top contender in the recruitment of five-star running back Richard Young for most of the last year. Though he says that is still the case, Ohio State will no longer receive an official visit from the country’s top-ranked 2023 running back prospect according to a tweet from Young on Monday night.
“I will not be taking an official visit to Ohio State for my fifth visit,” Young tweeted. “The Buckeyes will still be in my top schools.”
The fight for Young’s recruitment has taken a number of twists and turns over the last few months but right now it appears that the Alabama Crimson Tide have an overwhelming lead as he enters a pivotal month of June. Ohio State has one running back committed in the Class of 2023 but Tony Alford and Ryan Day have been hoping to sign two tailbacks in this recruiting cycle.
The Buckeyes currently have the country’s No. 6-ranked recruiting class.
Buckeyes sit atop ESPN SP+ Rankings for 2022
Everyone loves preseason rankings and they’re even better four months before the season begins. Most of the time those rankings aren’t worth much and are based on hype rather than any objective measure but that’s now how ESPN.com’s Billy Connelly does it. Connelly has crafted the SP+, a system that takes into account returning production, recently recruiting rankings, and recent history to try and get a better, more thorough ranking.
And with the majority of their team returning, it’s not a surprise to see Ohio State well represented in Connelly’s latest ranking. In fact, Ryan Day’s program enters the summer perched atop the list as the No. 1-ranked team heading into 2022.
