COLUMBUS — Ohio State officially knows where it stands in the eyes of the College Football Playoff Committee.

The Buckeyes are No. 1 in the country. But they aren’t content.

How can a team be the best in America and still not be satisfied? The Buckeyes are working through that question, finding ways to get better. And they are certainly aware of the perils that November can bring a top-five team.

“I think at this time of the season, you’re into November, crazy things can happen,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “We have to continue to stay focused on the things that have got us to this point: The discipline, the toughness, taking care of the football, tackling.

“Kids are impressionable nowadays. Everybody wants instant gratification. At this point of the year, the only thing that works is continuing to go back to the things that have worked. We just can’t get bored with that. We have to continue to embrace that, understand how important it is.”

Those are the things that have gotten them to No. 1 in the first playoff rankings, which were released Tuesday night. And the distractions could potentially be vaulted for Ohio State. The biggest key for the Buckeyes is avoiding the distractions and praise that comes with being the top team. Ohio State’s time to take care of what should be easy games against Maryland and Rutgers is here.
