COLUMBUS — Ohio State quarterback Will Howard keeps stacking great games for the Buckeyes. Howard was 21 of 26 through the air for 260 yards passing and three touchdowns and added another score on the ground to lead the offense against Purdue. On the season, Howard has 2,237 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, 5 interceptions and six rushing touchdowns on the year.

Howard can’t seem to crack into the Heisman Trophy conversation, but he is gaining buzz for another prestigious award in November. This week, Howard was named a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, which is given annually to the country’s top quarterback.

Howard is one of four Big Ten quarterbacks to be named semifinalists. The others are Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, Penn State’s Drew Allar and Indiana’s Kurtis Rourke.

Ohio State still has plenty of big games ahead on the schedule for Howard to play well in and make a strong closing argument. The Buckeyes will face Rourke and Indiana next week, and if they win that game and the Michigan game a week later, they’ll get another shot at Oregon in the Big Ten title game. They lost to Oregon by one point earlier in the year.

Howard may not be generating proper Heisman buzz, but the folks at the Davey O’Brien Award are taking notice of how good he has been this fall for the No. 2 Buckeyes.

ICYMI: Buckeyes freshman cornerback Bryce West loses black stripe

Ohio State cornerback Bryce West earned the first snaps of his career last week, six on defense and six on special teams, in the win over Purdue.

West is clearly improving during his freshman season, and he was given the clearest sign yet of that. He shed his black stripe after practice Wednesday night.

West is the 15th member of the Buckeyes 2024 recruiting class to lose the black stripe. Only punter Nick McLarty, defensive linemen Eric Mensah and Dom Kirks, cornerback Miles Lockhart, linebacker Garrett Stover, wide receiver Damarion Witten and offensive linemen — and twin brothers — Deontae and Devontae Armstrong remain as freshmen who haven’t shed the black stripe.

West is off that list now, becoming the latest Ohio State freshman to officially become a member of the program after making his debut in last weekend’s win.
