COLUMBUS — Ohio State safety Lathan Ransom is officially out for the Buckeyes in their Noon matchup against Nebraska.

Ransom, who is dealing with an undisclosed injury, was listed previously by Ohio State head coach Ryan Day as ‘day to day.’ Day made that public Wednesday after declining to comment on a potential Ransom injury earlier this week.

“There’s nothing long term there,” Day said. “He’ll be day to day right now. He’s improving very well. We’ll see how tomorrow goes.”

But now he won’t be in action for the bounce-back game Saturday against the Cornhuskers. Lettermen Row sources have indicated that Ransom is dealing with a foot injury.

Although Ransom missed three tackles at Oregon, per PFF, he had missed only three others all season. He’s allowed just 7.5 yards reception and just one touchdown this year, according to PFF. His 4.5 tackles for loss are tied with Caleb Downs for the second most on the team. Ransom’s forced a pair of fumbles, one against Marshall and another at Michigan State, and he notched a scoop-and-score touchdown in the opener versus Akron.

Day was asked Tuesday who the next man up would be at safety if Ransom can’t play Saturday when the Buckeyes take on Nebraska (Noon, FOX).

Jaylen McClain’s done a nice job. Malik Harford’s done a nice job,” he said. “Malik’s played some before, and Jaylen’s a good young player. So I’d probably say those guys, if you’re looking at some backups there.”

But Day has also made a lot of mention of veterans Lorenzo Styles and Jordan Hancock as potential movers back into Ransom’s safety role.

No matter how the Buckeyes try to make up for his absence, Lathan Ransom won’t be in action against Nebraska on Saturday.

Other notes from Ohio State availability report

+ Tight end Will Kacmarek is officially out. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day mentioned that Kacmarek will be out a while earlier this week, and that’s now confirmed. In his place, the Buckeyes will have to rely on tight ends Bennett Christian and Jelani Thurman — as well as even more production from veteran Gee Scott Jr.

+ Buckeyes freshman cornerback Aaron Scott Jr. is out — but why is unknown. He has been a second-team cornerback for most of the season, even dating back to training camp. Scott has played 47 defensive snaps across five games this season.

+ Of course, left tackle Josh Simmons is out for the rest of the year with a knee injury.

+ It appears that star running back Quinshon Judkins is at least going to be available. He underwent a hand procedure last week but it wasn’t expected to keep him out of any game action.

The full availability report from the program is now confirmed, making note that Ohio State doesn’t detail injury or disciplinary matters.
