COLUMBUS — Two months into the college football season, Ohio State will finally be back on the field.

Nebraska and the No. 5 Buckeyes kick off an eight-game Big Ten conference schedule noon Saturday in the Horseshoe.

The Buckeyes certainly have one of the best rosters in the country, paired with high expectations for the season. But Ohio State coach Ryan Day has kept all focus on the Huskers for the past two and a half weeks.

With a shortened schedule, there is even less room for error.

“We’ve had 39 practices, now there’s only been a very small percentage of those with pads on, but it’s no longer just practice,” Day said. “We’re playing in a game, so the urgency really has to show up. I told them: ‘You’re either going to look like a champ or look like a chump based on your preparation.’”

Ohio State will not have games against Bowling Green or Oregon to get ready for its conference schedule, but Day expects his team to be ready to play.

“My expectation is that the level of play is strong,” Day said. “That’s why we’ve been practicing. That’s been the emphasis: Make sure that we’re taking care of all the things, the penalties. It has to be a clean game. We start talking about scoring ‘X’ number of points or holding them to a shutout, we can’t do that.”

Ohio State won a year ago in Lincoln 48-7, intercepting Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez three times. Justin Fields threw three touchdowns and ran for another, and running back Master Teague added two scores on the ground.

The Buckeyes are heavily favored and have won 34-straight season opening games at Ohio Stadium. Ohio State last opened its season against a Big Ten opponent in 2017, beating Indiana 49-21 in Bloomington.

For anyone watching the game on TV or listening to the radio, Lettermen Row has all the viewing information that could possibly be needed to not miss a moment of Game One.
