Ohio State wins College Football Playoff national championship
ATLANTA — Your Ohio State Buckeyes, the 2025 national champions.
The Buckeyes beat Notre Dame 34-23 to become the champions of the first 12-team bracket.
On the path to the title, Ohio State beat No. 9 seed Tennessee, No. 1 seed Oregon in the Rose Bowl quarterfinal and No. 5 seed Texas in the Cotton Bowl semifinal. Last on the list was No. 7 seed Notre Dame, and the Buckeyes took care of business in Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday night.
It’s the program’s ninth all-time national title and first since 2014. The Buckeyes joined LSU, USC and Alabama as the programs with three national championships since 2000, those coming in 2002 under the BCS system and 2014 under the four-team College Football Playoff format.
With the win, Ohio State coach Ryan Day joins Kirby Smart of Georgia and Dabo Swinney from Clemson as the only active head coaches with a championship ring.
There’s also no more doubting Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard, a Kansas State transfer. He’s in a group with Rex Kern, Craig Krenzel and Cardale Jones as the last four Buckeyes quarterbacks to win a national championship.
