Buckeyes defensive end Omari Abor plans to enter transfer portal
COLUMBUS — Ohio State defensive end Omari Abor was one of the highest-ranked defensive commits in the 2022 recruiting class.
But after a couple of injuries and two years of sitting behind veteran defensive linemen, Abor is now hitting the open market to try earning playing time elsewhere. Abor announced his plans to enter the transfer portal Tuesday night. He told On3’s Hayes Fawcett of his intentions.
He’ll have three years of eligibility elsewhere — wherever he chooses to go.
Ohio State landed Abor out of Duncanville High School as part of its loaded 2022 recruiting class. Abor was the No. 79 overall player, the No. 12 defensive end and the No. 15-ranked prospect in the Lonestar State in his class.
He was part of a defensive line class that included Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson on the edge Hero Kanu on the interior of the defensive line.
That group sat behind Zach Harrison last year and then behind junior star defensive ends J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer this year. The Buckeyes defensive line has been productive in each of those two years. Abor was slated to be part of the next wave of defensive ends to step up in Larry Johnson’s room.

“I like Omari. I think Omari is really starting to move forward,” Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson said in the spring. “He’s 265 [pounds] now. … He missed a lot of football. It’s the fundamental part and the technique stuff that you miss. And the conditioning part because he wasn’t doing the football stuff. So he’s playing catch-up.”
The catch-up process took longer than expected, and Abor saw very limited time on the field in his second season at Ohio State.
Now, however, he will be entering the transfer portal to find his next collegiate stop, and he’ll have three years to make an impact wherever he lands. It just won’t be at Ohio State.
Omari Abor is hitting the transfer portal.
