COLUMBUS — Ohio State had one of the best defenses in all of college football this year, the first time that can be said in the last few years. Jim Knowles and the talent assembled turned the defense around from a poor unit to a strength of the team in two years.

The Big Ten awards reflect that in a big way.

Ohio State was heavily represented on the Big Ten all-defensive teams Tuesday, when the league made those honors public. The 11-1 Buckeyes have three first-team all-conference defenders, two second-team members and three third-team players, as well as four Big Ten honorable mention players.

It’s all highlighted by linebacker Tommy Eichenberg, who earned his second first-team all-conference honors. He was also on that list a year ago.

Eichenberg was joined as a first-team selection by defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau and cornerback Denzel Burke. All three were cornerstones of the defensive turnaround from the last two years.

Two defenders and a specialist were named second-team all-conference selections. Defensive end Jack Sawyer and defensive tackle Tyleik Williams earned those honors, as did first-year starting kicker Jayden Fielding.

And on the third team, linebacker Steele Chambers, safety Josh Proctor and defensive tackle Mike Hall represent the Buckeyes.

Four Buckeyes earned Big Ten honorable mention. Those four are safety Lathan Ransom, cornerback Davison Igbinosun, safety Sonny Styles and defensive tackle Ty Hamilton.
