Tim May: Caleb Downs wants to make plays for Ohio State, no matter how the opportunities come

COLUMBUS — If it comes to pass — or run, or interception, or kick/punt return — that Caleb Downs winds up with the ball in his hands this season for Ohio State, just know the following will be his thought. “Score," he said. That’s cut-to-the-core football thinking. Just like when Downs is at his regular position of safety, where he started and excelled as a freshman at Alabama last season, his primary thought is don’t let the other team score. Whether he’ll get the chance to have both thoughts in the same game[s] this season remains to be seen (of course, he can always pick off a pass or pluck a fumble). But everyone remembers Ohio State coach Ryan Day alluding to the idea earlier this year, spurred by the musings of new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, of giving Downs some touches on offense.
