COLUMBUS — Ohio State would much rather be in the College Football Playoff field. The Buckeyes clearly state beating Michigan, winning the Big Ten and getting a chance to compete for a national title as their three goals every year.

They went 0-3 this season, but there is still a consolation prize for an 11-1 Ohio State team that still has a case to be one of the best teams in the country, just with one loss on the road to a fellow elite team.

Now that the Buckeyes are out of the College Football Playoff, they’re off to a New Year’s Six bowl game. They have been in either a BCS game, the CFP or a New Year’s Six bowl every year since 2013. This time, they’re heading to the Cotton Bowl to take on No. 9 Missouri on Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. It’ll be played at AT&T Stadium.

This isn’t uncharted territory for the Buckeyes, by any means. They were left out of the four-team field as a one-loss non-Big Ten champ in 2015 and beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. They got left out of the CFP as a one-loss conference champion in 2018 and won the Rose Bowl over Washington.

So for the third time under the four-team playoff format, the Buckeyes are on the outside of the field, looking in. And they’ll play in a game that satisfy any of their aspirations for what this season could have been.

Ohio State had a prime chance to get in the four team field without any help on Championship Saturday. The Buckeyes played Michigan for the Big Ten East title just last week and came up short. So instead of being the No. 1 seed in a winnable CFP bracket, the Buckeyes will be heading to a consolation bowl prize they certainly won’t feel good about playing in.

That game is now official. Ohio State is heading to Arlington to take on Missouri in the Cotton Bowl.
