Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise. Chip Trayanum working with Buckeyes running backs

Ohio State recruited Chip Trayanum out of high school to play defense. He wanted to play running back, though, so he went to Arizona State for two seasons, during which he ran for 892 yards and 10 touchdowns, before transferring to the Buckeyes — to play defense.

But when walk-on breakout running back TC Caffey recently went down with a season-ending, long-term injury, Trayanum volunteered to be a Buckeyes running back, making the switch back to offense to give Ohio State some much needed depth behind the three healthy scholarship backs.

We felt like we needed to provide more depth at that position,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “Chip had come to us a couple of weeks ago and just said ‘hey, listen, if you need anything on offense, I’m here for you,’ which is just the way he is. He’s an unbelievable person, great attitude. So you know, we just felt like the time was right. … It’s good to get him out there and get him as part of the unit, because I think we’re going to need him.”

Now Trayanum is with the Ohio State offense after plenty of time with the Buckeyes defense. He is helping out where it’s needed right now. And he might even have an impact in that running backs room moving forward.

Full coverage of Buckeyes preparation for Penn State

The Buckeyes will battle the Nittany Lions inside Beaver Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a huge road trip as they end the October portion of the schedule. In preparation for the Buckeyes game against Penn State, they held a media session with head coach Ryan Day, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Spencer Holbrook and Tim May were back inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Tuesday, breaking down how the Buckeyes are turning their focus to Penn State in the latest Practice Report presented by Byers Auto. Every Tuesday following the media session with the Buckeyes, Tim and Spencer will chat about what they saw Saturday night and look ahead to what to expect from Ohio State the next Saturday.

After hearing from Ryan Day and other Buckeyes, the Lettermen Row crew is back for a full report on what it learned.
